First Time Guide to Self Storage

Some handy tips to help you get the most value when storing your possessions:

Where to start:

  • Your first step is to create a list of the items you want to store.

  • Then, estimate the amount of space you'll need. Remember, packing materials will make your packing more efficient. The better the packing, the more you can stack your items and the less floor space you will need. Click Here to View Our Handy Size Guide

  • Make a complete list of items you'll need to pack your materials, (boxes, tape, packing materials for fragile items, bags, permanent markers and drop cloths.) The supplies you need are available for purchase at any Stowaway Self Storage facility where you will also find hand carts, rental trucks and more. Check Here for Special Packaging Offers

Ok, I'm ready, now what?

  • If items are worth storing, then they are worth insuring. Check our Site Managers for what coverage is best for you.

  • Place smaller items inside refrigerators, freezers and furniture drawers.

  • No fumes are good fumes...When storing gas-powered equipment in the same unit as household items or furniture, drain the gas or any other chemicals that may foul the odor of other materials.

  • Draw a simple map of your storage unit to help remember where items are located.

  • Put all disassembled pieces in one location in your unit and clearly mark/bind them together.

How often will you be visiting your unit?

  • Items you want to access often are best left closest to the door.

  • Hand trucks or dollies are helpful.

  • Common tools left in your storage unit are handy for any items or equipment you need to disassemble or reassemble on-site.
